Medicaid provides health coverage to millions of Americans, including eligible low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and people with disabilities. Medicaid is administered by states, according to federal requirements.  The program is funded jointly by states and the federal government.

Together with the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Medicaid provides health coverage to over 72.5 million Americans.  In part because of expansion under the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid is currently the single largest source of health coverage in the United States.
